A guide to embroidering like a pro
Samuel Frost1. Choose the Right Fabric
Not all fabrics are created equal when it comes to embroidery. The best results often come from stable, non-stretchy fabrics like:
- Cotton, polyester, linen, wool, denim, canvas, twill.
💡 Tip: Avoid thin, stretchy materials unless you’re using a stabiliser (more on that below).
2. Stabilisers Are Your Best Friend
A stabiliser is a backing placed behind the fabric to keep it from shifting or puckering during stitching. There are several types:
- Cut-away stabilisers: Ideal for knits or stretchy fabrics.
- Tear-away stabilisers: Great for woven fabrics.
- Water-soluble stabilisers: Perfect for sheer or lightweight fabrics.
3. Pick the Perfect Thread
Quality thread makes a huge difference. Polyester and rayon are two of the most popular options:
- Polyester: Durable, vibrant, and fade-resistant.
- Rayon: Offers a beautiful sheen but is slightly more delicate.
Match your thread to your project needs—durability for workwear, sheen for decorative pieces, etc.
4. Understand Hoop Tension
Proper hooping ensures your design stays aligned and stitch quality remains consistent.
- Don’t overstretch the fabric.
- Ensure it’s taut like a drum—no sagging or slipping.
- Always use the correct hoop size for your design.
5. Master Your Digitising
Digitising is the process of converting your design into a stitch file your embroidery machine can read.
- Use professional software like Wilcom, Hatch, or Pulse.
- Pay attention to stitch density, underlay, and pathing.
- Avoid auto-digitising when possible—manual tweaks give better results.
6. Test Before You Press
Before you go full-scale on your project:
- Run a sample on scrap fabric.
- Check for alignment, thread tension, and puckering.
- Make final adjustments before the real deal.
7. Finishing Touches
Once the stitching is done:
- Trim excess threads carefully.
- Remove stabiliser properly (tear, cut, or rinse).
- Give it a gentle press with a pressing cloth to smooth out any hoop marks.
